CASTIGLIONE MESSER MARINO is a mountain town in Abruzzo; it rises at 1081 m asl, near the source of the Sinello river, in the province of Chieti, with 1533 inhabitants, far from the sea around 50 km. Of medieval origin, it retains a beautiful ancient center, characterized by stairways that rise along the village, at the top of which stands the Mother Church, dedicated to San Michele, in neoclassical style with a beautiful stone portal. On 11 September there is a traditional festival with a procession starting from the town center. It is customary for the statue of the Madonna to be supported only by women. On Christmas Eve, while awaiting the birth of Jesus, the "'ndoccie" (bundles of wood) are lit in all the streets and intersections, creating a suggestive crib atmosphere. It is worth making an excursion to Abetina di Selva Grande, a WWF oasis, also equipped with picnic areas. In the village there is grocery shop, super market, pharmacy, restaurants, bar.
