GISSI has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the 12th century fell under the influence of the D'Avalos. The Palazzo Carunchio and the ruins of the castle are fine examples of the city's buildings. The city has other good examples of buildings of the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries, adorned with fine architectural details. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest church in Gissi.
