Ancient stronghold of the Vastese coastal area, Monteodorisio inherited during the Middle Ages the control function once carried out by Histonium, the current city of Vasto, which instead did not survive the Roman Empire crisis. The first sources on Monteodorisio County, which boasted 13 castles, date back to the year 993, when the feud passed into Oderisio's hands, Count of Marsi, from which the name of the village derives. Whoever arrives at Monteodorisio is welcomed by the Shrine of Madonna delle Grazie, built after a series of miraculous events begun in 1886, when, during the old church restoration works, a water spring that healed sick people spouted. Since then, pilgrimages follow one another and the water of the Virgin is collected in a well. The historical centre of Monteodorisio, with its walls, sighting towers and the gates approaching the village, evokes in every corner its medieval history. Of the original 14th century plant, the Church of San Giovanni Battista preserves the foundation walls and the imposing bell tower, which, as in other Vastese towns, was part of the fortified village defensive system.
