GISSI has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the 12th century fell under the influence of the D'Avalos. The Palazzo Carunchio and the ruins of the castle are fine examples of the city's buildings. Built in the 19th century, Palazzo Carunchio is used as a town hall and houses the administrative offices of the city. The city has other good examples of buildings of the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries, adorned with fine architectural details. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest church in Gissi. Another church is the Chapel of Saint Lucia which is located in La Pineta, a pine forest which offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, including the Adriatic Sea. In Gissi wide variety of parties and festivals are held, many of which are religious holidays for the celebration of the saints, including the celebration of May 20th of San Bernardino of Siena. Other special holidays are the Feast of Saint Lucia August 20th and the Feast of San Rocco August 19th. Gissi has many attractions, restaurants and shops and is about 30 minutes from Vasto and the sea. Its population is about 3000 inhabitants.
